  Kenneth J. Phenow, MD, MPH
Chief Medical Officer
CIGNA

Dr. Ken Phenow is the Chief Medical Officer for CIGNA Healthcare in North Texas and Oklahoma. Prior to joining CIGNA in February 2007, Dr. Phenow spent five years with UnitedHealthcare in various medical leadership roles, including Medical Director for the Southwest Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana Health Plan markets as well as key clinical leadership roles in Care Coordination and Disease Management. Prior to this role, he was Health Plan Medical Director and Director of the Urgent Care Center with Scott & White in College Station, Texas.

Dr. Phenow is board certified in Family Medicine; he attended the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) majoring in Biochemistry and Political Science for his undergraduate degrees and earned a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration and Policy Analysis from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Public Health. He received his Medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin through the US Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program.

Dr. Phenow’s career in the Navy included his training in Family Medicine at Navy Medical Center, San Diego and Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in California and as a Staff Physician at Navy Hospitals and Clinics in San Diego and in Atsugi, Japan.

Dr. Phenow has published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Family Practice and has co-authored Preventive Medicine text book chapters. He has contributed to preventive guidelines publications including; Healthy People 2000 & Healthy People 2010, Putting Prevention into Practice and the US Preventive Services Task Force Prevention Guidelines as well as an education series on health effects of smoking published by the American Cancer Society.  

Dr. Phenow currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative in Washington, DC, is a member of the Texas Medical Home Initiative Board of Directors and serves on the Texas Academy of Family Practice’s Health Services and Managed Care Committee. He is pursuing an MBA degree through the American College of Physician Executives joint program with the University Massachusetts. Dr. Phenow is a Commander in the US Navy Medical Corps Reserves. He resides with his wife and children in Keller, Texas.
