Thomas J. Bond
Thomas J. Bond leads the firmwide
insurance practice group and practices insurance
and regulatory law in Texas and on a national
basis. Prior to joining Akin Gump, Mr. Bond
was the commissioner of insurance for the state
of Texas from 1982 to 1985.
Mr. Bond is a frequent speaker on public policy
issues related to insurance and managed health
care. He has been particularly active in the
national debate on the regulation of health
maintenance organizations and the application
of judicial sanctions to managed care decision-making.
His work includes legislative and executive
branch advocacy in Texas and other states and
before the U.S. government. Mr. Bond’s career
also includes staff work for the Texas Legislature,
political consulting, freelance writing, editing
and teaching.
Mr. Bond received a B.A. in English from Baylor
University in 1969 and an M.F.A. in writing
from Bowling Green State University in 1973.
He received his J.D. with honors from the University
of Texas School of Law in 1982. Mr. Bond is
a member of several professional organizations,
including the State Bar of Texas, the State
Bar of Colorado and the American Bar Association.
He was also a founding board member of the Federation
of Regulatory Counsel.
Mr. Bond is listed in The Best Lawyers in America
(2006).
